Top 10 Benefits of Off Grid Living: Why It’s Worth Considering
Hi, and welcome. I'm Jim and I Live Off-Grid with my dog Willow in the UK. I Have lived this more simple way of existence since I left home and moved into my van at 17 years old. That would be 18 years ago now. Since then I have worked and managed my small homestead of three and a half acres in Cornwall, whilst being completely Off the Grid.
It seems in recent years there has been a massive increase in people looking into the option of off grid living or at least transitioning to certain aspects of it. Weather its the need to become more self-reliant, live more sustainably or just to escape the rat race and get a closer connection to nature. I will give you my top 10 reasons why adopting an off grid lifestyle might be the best decision you'll ever make.
1. Independence and Self-Sufficiency
The first, most significant advantage to off grid living is the fact you can gain control over your resources. This being the big three, Heating, water and electricity. Heating tends to be with wood and can be grown relatively fast if manged properly, your water source can be through drilling a well or rainwater catchment and Electricity can be created using solar, wind or hydro electric.
2. Reduced Utility Costs
The cost of energy has skyrocketed in recent years so incorporating self reliance in this area can reduce or completely eliminate monthly utility bills. although the initial setup cost could be higher with things such as solar, the investments will save you money over time and provide you with more financial freedom.
3. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Lifestyle
If you choose to live off grid it can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. By using renewable energy sources or practicing things like reducing waste or growing your own food, you can help contribute to a healthier planet. There are many eco-friendly options when practicing off grid living such as building with natural materials or creating your own soil by composting.
4. Closer Connection to Nature
when living of grid you are surrounded by nature every day. I found by working in the garden, foraging or just spending time relaxing, gives you a connection back to nature that you don't get from living in a standard western house, usually in a town or city.
5. Security from Modern Dependencies
There's always the possibility of loosing your utility's when relying on the energy company's. By creating off grid systems to replace these, means that if this ever happens, you can carry on heating your home or feed your family.
6. Improved Mental and Physical Health
Living an off grid lifestyle can promote mindfulness and reduces stress. As well as staying active from gardening, chopping wood and other physical activities that will improve your fitness, whilst the absence of the all the digital distractions that currently bombard us all must benefit our mental well being.
7. Financial Freedom
By adopting a more minimalistic life and eliminating utility bills or mortgages you can save a considerable amount. By living an off grid lifestyle and growing your own food , raising livestock or starting a small business, like selling honey or eggs from your land you could easily achieve financial independence.
8. Community
I think a lot of people may assume that living off grid is isolating, and yes, that can be true for some, that wish for that. But there is vibrant, like minded communities all over the world to interact with, such as eco-villages, permaculture groups and online forums, who all promote the benefits of community and human connection.
9. Learning Valuable Life Skills
There is something freeing about learning real skills that give you more independence, and living off grid provides you with many opportunities to increase your knowledge, from installing and maintaining renewable energy systems to building your own home there is always something new to learn and a thriving community to learn from.
10. Living a Simpler, More Purposeful Life
Essentially off grid living can provide a more simple and mindful life. Eliminating the distractions of modern consumer culture, and getting back to a slower pace of life, whilst being able to support yourself and those around you. This allows you to focus on what truly matters like family, nature and personal development.
How to Start Your Off Grid Journey
If you think the benefits of off grid living have inspired you then take the first steps towards this lifestyle. I would start by researching energy systems and sourcing some land that would provide you with your off grid goals and dreams. Remember, every journey starts with small deliberate changes.
